Low GI Sugar hits the market (ABC News)
The world's first low glycemic index sugar has been launched by the Federal Government.
Over the last three years, Melbourne company Horizon Science has worked with the Mossman Sugar Mill in Far North Queensland to create the product.
Branded LoGicane, it's digested slower than regular sugar, making it better for diabetics and those fighting obesity.
Horizon Science's Dr Barry Kitchen says the mill will increase production this year.
"It will be gradually moving out of its low value raw sugar that just gets what's called a New York 11, and moving towards the more value-added low GI sugar over the next couple of years," he says.
"So it will be a gradual turnaround, which will improve their profitability and help the sugar cane growers."
