1. What is LoGiCane?
LoGiCane is a natural, wholesome and 100% Australian product made from cane sugar. It can be fully substituted for regular white sugar. LoGiCane has been independently tested and certified by the Glycemic Index Foundation in Australia with a low glycemic index (GI) of 50.
The glycemic index (GI) is a ranking of carbohydrates in foods on a scale from 0 to 100 according to the extent to which they raise blood glucose levels. Foods with a high GI (70 or more) are those which cause our blood glucose levels to go higher for longer, damaging vital tissues and organs.
Low GI foods, by virtue of their slow digestion, absorption and/or metabolism, produce a less pronounced rise in blood glucose and insulin levels, and have proven benefits for health. Low GI diets have been shown to reduce blood glucose levels in people with diabetes (type 1 and type 2). They also have benefits for weight management.
Research has shown that Australians eat too many high GI carbohydrates and not enough low GI carbohydrates.
2. How is it different to regular white sugar?
LoGiCane has a low GI of 50, compared to white sugar which has a medium GI of 65 (average). Low GI foods, such as LoGiCane, have a smaller impact on blood glucose, which is better for people’s health. LoGiCane also contains more of the natural nutrients found in sugar cane like antioxidants.
3. Do all the retained natural compounds change the taste of LoGiCane?
No, it is a fully substitutable ingredient with the same sweetness and function as raw sugar.
4. Is it natural/does it have chemicals added to it?
LoGiCane contains no chemical additives and has not been genetically modified. It is made from 100% sugar cane grown in Mossman, Queensland and retains more of the natural polyphenols, minerals and organic acids found in sugar cane.
5. Is it the same as Equal or other low calorie high intensity sweeteners?
No - LoGiCane is made from 100% sugar cane grown in Mossman, Queensland and retains more of the natural polyphenols, organic acids and minerals from sugar cane. Low calorie sweeteners are commonly made from aspartame or sucralose, neither of which are found in LoGiCane.
6. Is it the same as brown sugar?
Brown sugar has a medium to high glycemic index (GI) of 65 (average), while LoGiCane has a GI of 50 which is low. Low GI foods, such as LoGiCane, have a smaller impact on blood glucose, which is better for people’s health. LoGiCane also contains more of the natural nutrients found in sugar cane like antioxidants.
7. What is the colour in the new sugar? Is it an additive?
LoGiCane is golden in colour similar to raw sugar. It contains no chemical additives and has not been genetically modified.
8. Is it lower in calories than regular sugar/better for dieters?
No, LoGiCane has the same calories as regular sugar. However eating mainly low GI carbohydrate foods, including LoGiCane, will keep your energy levels balanced and help you feel satisfied for longer between meals. For this reason, LoGiCane may be of benefit to people who are trying to lose weight (as part of a healthy low GI diet).
9. Can it be used in exactly the same way as regular sugar?
LoGiCane has the same sweetness as regular sugar. It can be used in exactly the same way as regular sugar for baking, cooking and for sprinkling on cereal.
10. Is it suitable for children?
Yes, LoGiCane has the same sweetness, texture and overall function as regular sugar and is suitable for children.
11. Can LoGiCane be useful for children who are hyperactive?
LoGiCane, like all sugar, will not have any effect on childhood hyperactivity. A small proportion of children become hyperactive when they consume certain added or naturally occurring chemicals in food. Sugar in itself does not cause hyperactivity.
12. Is it suitable for diabetics?
Logicane, like other nutritive sweeteners, can be substituted for other carbohydrates in the meal plan of people with diabetes. Or if added to the meal plan, it can be covered with insulin or other glucose-lowering medications. Care should be taken to avoid excess energy intake. Because it has a low GI, Logicane is a better choice for people with diabetes than regular cane sugar.
13. Is it healthy?
LoGiCane retains more of the natural goodness found in sugar cane to provide a healthier choice than regular sugar. White sugar has a medium glycemic index (GI) of 65, while LoGiCane has a GI of 50 which is low.
Low GI foods, such as LoGiCane, have a smaller impact on blood glucose, which is better for people’s health. LoGiCane also contains more of the natural nutrients found in sugar cane like antioxidants.
14. Does this mean people can eat lots more sugar as long as it’s LoGiCane?
No - LoGiCane supports the National Health and Medical Research Council’s Australian Dietary Guidelines where added sugars are advised to be eaten in moderation as part of a balanced diet and active lifestyle.
Horizon Science and the Glycemic Index Foundation do not encourage the increased consumption of sugar; rather the innovation is about providing consumers with a ‘better for you’ choice. Horizon Science aims to help lower the GI of average Australians. Sugar is a basic carbohydrate and, just as there are good oils and bad oils, Horizon Science likes to think of LoGiCane as a good carbohydrate.
15. Does LoGiCane have fewer kilojoules than regular sugar?
Regular white sugar has 1700kj (405 calories) per 100 grams, and LoGiCane has 1690kj (402 calories) per 100 grams. However, LoGiCane contains more of the natural nutrients found in sugar cane like antioxidants.
16. Is LoGiCane the same price as regular sugar?
LoGiCane has a recommended retail price of $2.79 for 750 grams, and white sugar is $1.60 per kilogram.
17. How does LoGiCane provide longer lasting energy?
Eating mainly low GI carbohydrate foods, including LoGiCane, will keep your energy levels balanced and help you feel satisfied for longer between meals. This is because low GI foods, by virtue of their slow digestion, absorption and/or metabolism, produce gradual rises in blood glucose and insulin levels.
18. How is LoGiCane a ‘better for you’ choice?
LoGiCane retains more of the natural goodness found in sugar cane to provide a healthier choice than regular sugar. White sugar has a medium glycemic index (GI) of 65, while LoGiCane has a GI of 50 which is low.
19. What does the GI symbol on the LoGiCane packaging mean?
LoGiCane carries the GI symbol, because it has been independently tested, and certified by the Glycemic Index Foundation (GIF) in Australia as a healthier low GI food.
20. When will we see the food industry using this product in biscuits, cereals etc?
Food and beverage trials are already underway with a number of major global food manufacturers. Until these trials are complete, we cannot disclose any further details.
21. Where and when can I buy LoGiCane?
LoGiCane is available for purchase at major retailers throughout Australia including Woolworths and Coles.
22. What’s low GI?
23. Why is a low GI diet important?
Low GI diets have been shown to improve both glucose and lipid levels in people with diabetes (type 1 and type 2). They have benefits for weight management because they help control appetite and delay hunger. Healthy, low GI diets also reduce insulin levels and may help improve insulin resistance.
24. Why is low GI sugar important?
We need to lower the average GI of the Australian diet from its current level of 55-60, down to an optimal level of around 45, to help decrease the risk of developing chronic disease.
To achieve this, we need to provide lower GI choices in all major categories of glycemic carbohydrate e.g. bread, breakfast cereals and baked goods. Sugar and sugar-containing foods are one of the top 5 contributors of glycemic carbohydrate in the Australian diet, so it is important to provide a lower GI sugar choice to assist in lowering the average GI of the diet.
25. Isn’t low GI only for people with diabetes?
Low GI diets have been shown to improve both glucose and lipid levels in people with diabetes (type 1 and type 2). However, they also have benefits for weight management because they help control appetite and delay hunger. A low GI diet is suitable for all of the family.
26. If I bake a cake (or similar) with LoGiCane, does that make it low GI?
No – all ingredients are measured when evaluating a food’s GI, therefore other ingredients may affect overall GI. For more information on how to achieve a low GI diet, go to www.glycemicindex.com or www.gisymbol.com.
27. Can a low GI diet help you lose weight?
Low GI foods, by virtue of their slow digestion, absorption and metabolism, produce gradual rises in blood glucose and insulin levels, and have proven benefits for health including weight management.
Low GI diets have been shown to improve both glucose and lipid levels in people with diabetes (type 1 and type 2). They have benefits for weight management because they may help reduce appetite and delay hunger. Healthy low GI diets also reduce insulin levels and may decrease insulin resistance.
